Prognostic Factors in Kidney Cancer and New TNM Classification

چکیده
Staging systems are widely used in cancer treatment for classifying patients into groups that have different risks of disease progression and death. This information is the basis for planning appropriate treatment strategies. The staging system most often used in patients with renal cell cancer (RCC) is the tumour-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system, which is based on data from large multicentre studies with a good level of evidence. Despite continual revisions to integrate results from new clinical studies, use of the TNM system remains controversial. Current research helps to understand the genetic and protein expression profiles of the different histological subtypes of RCC. These biomarkers will enhance the ability to predict an individual behaviour of a tumour and to stratify patients into a more sophisticated staging system. # 2008 European Association of Urology. The staging of cancer: a retrospective and prospective appraisal.
The tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification describes the anatomic extent of cancer. The ability to separately classify the individual T, N, and M elements and then group them into stages differs from other cancer staging classifications, which are primarily concerned with summarized groups. The objectives of the TNM system are to aid clinicians and investigators in planning treatment, asses...
متن کاملComparing the prediction accuracy of artifical neural networks and other statistical models for breast cancer survival
The TNM staging system has been used since the early 1960's to predict breast cancer patient outcome. In an attempt to increase prognostic accuracy, many putative prognostic factors have been identified. Because the TNM stage model can not accommodate these new factors, the proliferation of factors in breast cancer has lead to clinical confusion. What is required is a new computerized prognosti...

متن کاملComparison of the 7th and 8th editions of the American joint committee on cancer TNM classification for patients with stage III gastric cancer
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The eighth TNM edition for gastric cancer was released in 2016 and included major revisions, especially of stage III. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the new AJCC TNM classification in comparison with the 7th edition for stage III gastric cancer. METHODS Clinical and histopathological data on 1,496 patients operated on for stage III ...
متن کاملClassification based on the combination of molecular and pathologic predictors is superior to molecular classification on prognosis in colorectal carcinoma.
PURPOSE Classification based on a combination of molecular and pathologic predictors had never been done using hierarchical cluster analysis. For this purpose, we identified prognostic classification based on molecular predictors, pathologic and molecular predictors, and compared their respective prognostic efficacy together with that of tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage. Moreover, we investiga...
